Pros: Versatile, backlit color touch screen,
smooth, quick page turns, robust iBooks store, works with all major
ebook stores and free sources, runs apps, including Kindle for iPadCons:
Screen is hard to read in bright sunlight, bigger and heavier than most
e-readers, short battery life, 3G wireless costs extra, unlike Kindle, expensive .. The Apple iPad tablet
computer doubles nicely as an ebook reader, experts say. In some ways,
it's much better than an Amazon Kindle.
Pros: Size, ease of use, speed, efficiency.. Cons: Lack of Flash support, Camera quality..
I
have been balking on buying an iPad for a couple of years now. Since I
started working w with electronic health records, I decided that it was a
good time to purchase an iPad. I find it very convenient that I can
carry everything at my fingertips when I am in clinic, but also in a
very compact device.At first I
thought "Why would I need a physical keyboard when the on-screen
keyboard is there?" However, I have found that, if I am sitting down to
type for a few minutes, the physical bluetooth keyboard is a nice
addition to the functionality of the unit. My wife and I have used it
when we travel with our son. Being able to operate it with one hand is
very convenient. We use to take our netbook along for general necessity
but now, the iPad does everything that we wants. We
bought the WiFi and 3G model but have not linked it to our Verizon
account yet, so cannot speak to the efficiency of the OTA signal and
functionality. Most of the time WiFi is available so it works pretty
slick that way.The lack of Flash
support is mildly disappointing, however I haven't found that it has
been overly hindering to our experience web wise with the iPad.
The video that it takes is very
good quality and I was pleasantly surprised with how decent it was. The
still camera on the other hand, is grainy and leaves a lot to be
desired. My wife's iPhone 4S has a much better camera on it. Granted, I
am not taking professional photos with it, however a token camera is
below Apple's normal stellar quality of customer interface and device
satisfaction.Music wise the speaker
is adequate and does a nice job with the volume and clarity of music.
The integration of iOS5 and iTunes with wireless updating now, just
increases the functionality of the device.Overall
I would rate this a good purchase. I do believe that the price point
could be lower but am happy overall with the value of the purchase
Pros: Battery life, ease of use, weight and size and inexpensive useful apps. Cons: Initial cost and AT&T's 3G coverage.A
lot of people assume my iPad is just an expensive toy and truthfully I
do use it for reading books, watching movies, surfing the net and
listening to music. It's great on airplanes for that. But I've also
downloaded Numbers and Pages which I use for work... not daily but at
least two or three times a week.If
you are looking for a highly customizable tablet then you need to head
for an Android. This tablet is somewhat locked down and you'll need
iTunes to set it up and occasionally back it up. You can't change the
main screens much and multi-tasking is very limited... but I've not had
any problems with it's limitations so far. I can't remember the last
time I wanted to run two movies at the same time and flip back and forth
between them. Frankly the thing just works... no muss, no fuss.Battery
life has been exceptional. I've gone three days with moderate use and
still had over 40% of the charge left. It's reasonably light and the
curved back feels better in my hand than the old iPad does. The screen
quality is very good even without the 'retina' display - I don't know if
I'd be able to see much difference even if it were higher resolution.I
got the AT&T 3G model and frankly my only problems have been with
AT&T's service. There seem to be a number of dead zones and low bar
areas around town that cause transfer problems - especially annoying
when working
in a moving vehicle. WiFi performance is excellent, especially over my
Airport Extreme at home. Fortunately AT&T does have a lot of
hotspots available that I can use for free that give me better data
transfer speeds than the 3G. Verizion coverage may be better but their
data plan costs more too.I picked up
some accessories so I can download my camera directly to the iPad and
got some apps like iMovie and Adobe Photoshop to work with them without
transferring them to a PC. It takes a bit.............
The Apple iPad tablet computer doubles nicely as an ebook reader, experts
say. In some ways, it's much better than an Amazon Kindle(*Est. $110). Both allow you to buy ebooks (or download free ones) wirelessly and
organize them neatly, and both have displays that look like real printed
books. But the iPad has a big, backlit 9.7-inch color touch screen, unlike
the Kindle's smaller black-and-white screen that can't be seen in the dark.
Although Apple's iBookstore isn't as huge as Amazon's, the iPad can read
the widely used ePub file type (unlike the Kindle), and if you want to buy
from Amazon, the iPad can run Amazon's free Kindle app. What's more, the
iPad is a tablet computer that can play videos and games, run apps and is
otherwise far more versatile than the Kindle.
Still, testers find some important drawbacks. The iPad is bigger and heavier
than the Kindle, which makes it less comfortable to hold. Its battery life
is measured in hours, while the Kindle's is measured in weeks. AT&T 3G
wireless is included free on the upper-level Kindle, but costs $15 to $25
extra per month on the iPad (both have built-in Wi-Fi on all models). And
the iPad's screen is hard to read in bright sunlight. For these reasons,
reviewers say people who plan to read a lot of ebooks will probably still
be happier with a Kindle. However, one iPad drawback cited in many reviews
-- that its backlit screen causes eyestrain -- is actually a fallacy, The
Wall Street Journal reports. Ophthalmologists say backlit screens cause no
more eyestrain than a Kindle screen does. If you're looking for something
in between an iPad and a Kindle, the Barnes & Noble Nook Color(*Est. $200) has a 7-inch backlit color touch screen and decent web browser, but
it concentrates mostly on e-reading and doesn't have all of the iPad's tablet
functions.
Plenty of sources have thoroughly tested the iPad
as an ebook reader (usually comparing it with the Amazon Kindle or
Barnes & Noble Nook), including ConsumerReports.org,
DigitalTrends.com, PCMag.com, CNET, Macworld, USA Today, I4U.com and The
Wall Street Journal. Users at Apple's iTunes Store post reviews of the
iBooks app, which enables e-reading on the iPad.
